During the time
of Pliny's discovery, dinosaur bones had not been scientifically classified.
Fossilized dinosaur bones at that time were thought to be from dragons or
giant freaks of nature.
No one in 1802 had ever heard of a dinosaur. Therefore, the scientists
that first studied Pliny's track needed something other than a dinosaur
to compare the tracks with to find out what kind of animal may have made
them.
